In one line

The instance clock runs from create to delete, with storage and backups alongside. I/O only meters on magnetic.

What gets missed

RDS does not charge on its own side of a cross-AZ hop, so an app reaching the DB across an AZ pays the EC2 side twice and the RDS side not at all. Multi-AZ still doubles the instance and storage lines.

Find it on your bill

Filter Cost Explorer or your Cost and Usage Report by these usage types. A usage type with no region prefix means us-east-1.

  • InstanceUsage
  • Multi-AZUsage
  • RDS:GP3-Storage
  • RDS:ChargedBackupUsage

Bills the same way

These services turn exactly the same meters, so what you learn here transfers.
