In one line

Flat hourly fee per cluster for the control plane. Nodes and everything they touch are billed separately.

What gets missed

An empty cluster still pays the hourly fee, and drifting into extended Kubernetes support multiplies it six times over. Cross-AZ pod traffic and NAT land on the EC2 and VPC bills, not on the EKS one.

Find it on your bill

Filter Cost Explorer or your Cost and Usage Report by these usage types. A usage type with no region prefix means us-east-1.
